By Alex J.Walling
(Halifax Daily News columnist)

I don't know if it's a good thing for Scotland or Nigeria but it certainly was not a good thing for my city of Halifax, Nova Scotia and I applaud the decision to pull out of it.

We talk a lot about fiscal responsibility. In this case our leaders did more than talk, they acted and good for them.

The reason it wasn't good was due to the cost. Yes, cost. It came down to money as it usually does.

As a columnist I was for the games and the infrastructure it would bring but the first figure that floated was 500 million. I could live with their updated figure of 785-million. Many of us could live with a billion. But no higher.

But everything has it's price and at 1.7, and that could be a low ball figure, it simply was for us too costly. I

We have no major infrastructure such as a major stadium that could host the games and have no swimming facilities and it would have been nice to have them. But to go into a billion or more dollars in debt doesn't make sense.

We could build a stadium and aquatic centre for 300 million or less.

And as for the games I really see them as 4th rate at best. First come the Olympics, then you can put either the Pan-AM and World titles (World figure skating, World hockey, etc) and then maybe in fourth place, these games from countries very few of us have ever heard.

Maybe some places have enough infrastructurre to handle the event, and maybe their federal government is prepared to put up a lot of money. In our case, all our levels of government placed a limit and it amounted to 900-million dollars way short of what was needed.

And most of us couldn't care about shooting, field hockey and netball. Most of us had never heard of netball until a month ago.

It's good in a way that if it would be held on your city. The tourism on your city would increase such as the income of the local people would increase also. Your right on the down side its coast a lot. But if you think about it its a win win situation.

Yes fred It's totally a win win situation. What if the city that is hosting the games has a limited fund don't you think it would be bad if the city will host with a limited funds. I think it would be bad forcing to host a game when your city is not ready for a big event. Rather that leave a good impression to the tourist it would lead into a bad experience for then.
